Walk through the massive carved gates of Hacienda Antigua and step back in time. The gentle courtyard with its big cottonwood and abundance of flowers is the heart of this 200-year old adobe hacienda. Relax in the shade of the portal or soak up the bright southwestern sun by the swimming pool. In the late 1790's the Yrisarri family built their hacienda on the El Camino Real between Santa Fe and Mexico City. The first Yrisarri, Don Pablo, had been sent here by the King of Spain to look for hidden treasure. Don Pablo never found the treasure of gold, but settled in the new territory and made it his home. For the next two centuries, the Yrisarris lived within these thick earthen walls, becoming proominent ranchers and community leaders. At one time, there were as many as 28 rooms that housed a variety of activities in addition to the family's living quarters. Friends, neighbors and weary travelers on the trail stopped here to pick up provisions from the mercantile store or dance in the cantina. You too can enjoy the history, the peace of the courtyard and the luxurious gardens. The shade of the massive old cottonwood tree and the sounds of a bubbling fountain or a winter's sunset viewed from the coziness of a crackling pinon fire will lull you into retrospection and rest after the day's activities.
